Idea in short

He is convinced of himself, is constantly present and is anxious to put himself in the best light. His is a self-initiated program in himself. You must be prepared for an extremely powerful ego. For one, the self-proponent has a single purpose – promote himself.

This self-effacing artist is like no other office character – to make every situation his own stage and to place himself at the center of the attention. This is achieved at different levels, which can be roughly summarized as follows:

  • Optical level
  • Acoustic level
  • Communicative level

Colleagues who belong to this group attach great importance to their appearance. After all, it is their frame of reference through which they perceive others. The fact that the self-proponent is purely visual is not only due to his style of dress, hair or general appearance, but also self-confidence. He has such a great ego that it influences his posture. They are also well-known for their vociferous behaviour to stand out among the crowd. A clear, distinct pronunciation combined with an above-average volume is the hallmark of this office character.

With which we would be at the third level. The self-proponent is never shied away from the conversation with his colleagues. In principle, conversations are at a very good quality level. However, there is a small problem: people who like to be in the center, avoid dialogues by tearing the scepter and leading monologues. The self-proponent can speak without commas & full stops, and is always anxious to stand by himself as a Savior. At this point, it becomes clear that there is a potential for conflict between the self-proponent and his colleagues. They have to suffer partly under the one-man or one-woman show.

How to deal with them?

Primarily introverted people, who prefer to work by themselves and in the background have great difficulties in working with self-proponents. If you want to deal with this very special type of character, you should be aware of the fact that not everything that is loudly audible also has anything concrete.

It is best to point out the self-proponent by listening attentively and pointing to possible errors. This does not sound particularly collegial, but shows its effect after a short time. Of course the self-employed will try to justify himself and to blame himself. It is then only a matter of time until his self-staged fortress wavers and finally collapses.

Note: Always be constructive in your critique & be objective in your arguments.

Do not dare to directly confront a self-proponent. The performances of a self-proponent can played naively to question:

Can you explain this more precisely, I think I have not quite understood it yet?

This almost exposes the monstrosity of the self-proponent as hot air. It is also important to know that it does not make much sense to counter the self-proponent with confidence and an artificial extroversion. Such a behaviour will only further arouse the character and ensure that the actual intervention becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

For this reason, managers should always try to keep such people as far apart from introverts as possible. Always think carefully about what you are discussing with this character. Most of the self-proponents in the office have no scruples to sell the ingenious idea of their colleagues as their own. Such a thought-provoking process is, unfortunately, the order of the day in many companies and regularly causes conflicts.

The bad news: In doubt for the defendant. If you can not clearly prove that the colleague has stolen the idea, you will be the one who has to live with a loss of image & reputation.
