Cover Letter

Often skipped by most applicants, a cover letter is more than just a formality or courtesy – it is an opportunity to impress. Research suggests that Adcom favors applications that are accompanied by a cover letter, making it a critical component of your application strategy. A well-written cover letter is an opportunity to show the Adcom your:

  • First impression: A concise and compelling cover letter is your first chance to stand out and be considered a strong candidate amongst tough competition. Immediately emphasizing your key strengths will help ‘sell you,’ grabbing the reader’s attention and increasing the likelihood of progression through the selection process
  • Unique Fit: A cover letter is an important way to showcase how your unique combination of skills and experience meet the key requirements of the job description. It is your chance to show a clear link between your knowledge, experience and abilities and the expectations of the Adcom
  • Personality: The wording of your cover letter can express your personality in a way that your SOP or CV cannot. The tone of your letter gives the Adcom an important insight into your personality and the kind of traits that could add value to their incoming class It allows you to explain in your own words why you are a strong candidate
  • Enthusiasm: A compelling cover letter shows you have taken the time to research the university and understand their expectations. It is an opportunity to express that you are enthusiastic about the program and to demonstrate your fit

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Your undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) contributes 68% weightage towards admissions. Following the GPA, your SOP carries up to 14% weightage in admissions. Your SOP allows the Admissions Committee (Adcom) to not only compile an overview of your background, but also evaluate your writing style, linguistic competences, maturity, etc. Your SOP is an important narrative to your entire application. A well-written SOP could downplay certain weaknesses and convince the Adcom to lean towards offering you an admit. We follow an iterative approach in creating a compelling SOP, together with our clients. We also evaluate each iteration of your SOP for:

  • Readability
  • Language diversity
  • Simplicity
  • Weasel words
  • Grammar and spelling
  • Narrative flow
  • Sentence and paragraph length
  • Storyline
  • Etc.

We actively suggest and revise edits to ensure that the final product – your SOP – presents a narrative that the Adcom finds compelling to grant you an admit. We also typeset the SOP using our tools to ensure consistency in design, layout and formatting across your other application documents, such as CV, Cover Letter, etc. to present a professional and well-polished application package.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Typically, the most important factors in university admissions are: grades in undergraduate studies, curriculum, test scores, and overall GPA. However, some universities, typically those with holistic approaches to evaluation, will give merit to the information included in your CV. It will not necessarily include or exclude you from a class on its own, but it can push you over the edge if you are a candidate who is on the fence. In partnership with the essay, letters of recommendation, test scores, and GPA, the CV shows a student’s commitment to life outside of the classroom, demonstrates passions and interests. The document should reflect what is important to the applicant and thereby assists the Adcom in recognizing good fit or not. There are also universities that offer leadership and service scholarships, often in addition to academic awards. In these cases, the only opportunity for the Adcom to learn if a student might be qualified to receive one of these scholarships is by reading the CV. If one is not submitted or if it does not offer a quality view of the applicant’s time outside of the classroom, nay potential scholarship could be in jeopardy. We actively review and revise edits to ensure that the final product – your CV – presents a compelling overview of your profile that the Adcom finds insightful. We also typeset the SOP using our tools to ensure consistency in design, layout and formatting across your other application documents to present a professional and well-polished application package.

Recommendation Letters

When Adcom evaluates applicants, they are looking at two categories: the “hard factors”, such as grades, test scores, GPA – essentially anything that’s quantitative, and the “soft factors,” or qualitative elements, such as essays, extra curricular activities, demonstrated interest, and recommendation letters. Letters of recommendation help round out your applicant profile. They provide insight into what you are like as a student and person from the perspective of someone who has worked closely with you during your academic career. Most selective universities require one to three recommendation letters with your application, usually from your teachers or academic supervisors. Recommendation letters are just one of many application components, but they are a critical part of completing a full personal and academic profile and require strategic planning. Powerful letters of recommendation, ones that provides strong, positive insights into the candidate, can help students, who were slightly below on the other measures, enhance their odds of securing an admit. We employ our frameworks, tools and admissions insights to help draft compelling recommendation letters that bolster your candidature and validate the critical aspects of your application package.
